IPA Supports Cyclist in the 2004 Paralympics
IPA helped to support cyclist Daniel Coulthurst
from Barbados in his quest for a medal at the 2004 International Paralympic Games in
Athens, Greece.
IPA helped Coulthurst, the only paralympian from Barbados, participate in the
Paralympics by providing him with needed
accessories for the competition. These
accessories included bike parts such as custom made wheels and chains, as well as
personal equipment, including a racing helmet and sunglasses.
"IPA’s generous contributions made it possible for me to compete in the 2004
International Paralympic Games. I appreciate their support in helping me with the
necessary equipment, making me a better paralympian." said Coulthurst.
Coulthurst is the Caribbean’s best-known Paralympic cyclist and is becoming one of
the world’s best. A double amputee, born without legs below the knees, Coulthurst
is the first Caribbean Cyclist to compete at the Paralympics in both Sydney,
Australia in 2000 and in Athens this year. Coulhurst also participated in the 2003
Open European Cycling Championships, 14km Time Trial.
"I really want to win a medal for Barbados and it has been hard to prepare for
this, but all I can do is always go out there and give it my best," said Coulthurst.
Coulthurst finished in 11th place overall out of 25 by lapping Afghanistan and out
sprinting Iraq in the final lap.
